Degas and the Ballet

If you have not yet viewed this remarkable show, do so soon. His compositions are outstanding. His observations of dancers in motion are incredible. His application of pastels? Fixing between layers is the way I paint with pastels. Catalogue? Worth every penny!

I also enjoyed this. My favourite was one of the early ones which showed some rather blurry dancers on the stage - but the depiction of the orchestra is so beautiful. There are little pools of light highlighting a face here and there and a pair of crossed bassoons.

Perhaps it is unfair to display an artist's practice shots, but some of the sketches show a rugby player's hands on the end of a dancer's graceful arms! The interaction with pioneers of photography and movies was a revelation for me.

I have another visit booked.
