Sue Howes

Textiles and texture have been an enduring passion of mine for 40 years or more. I find both the natural and man-made environment inspirational.

I enjoy building up textures using fabric, fleece, thread and beads. My work has many representative references as I try to capture the essence of an image. Colour, line and form interest me; particularly bright clear hues.

Many years ago I gained City and Guilds Embroidery and machine embroidery qualifications and have undertaken several textile course over the years.

Recently, I have enjoyed making felt and exploring the possibilities using a technique known as `nuno’, where the fleece adheres to fabric during the felting process creating a crinkled effect.

I am also interested in glass fusing. I love the clarity of coloured glass and the endless designs that can be created using shape, line and colour.

I also enjoy using watercolour and other media to create paintings.

My Japanese guests bring me pieces
of fabric. I have used these with felt to make the four season, particularly the cherry blossom so redolent of Japan.
Following a Gaudi ‘pilgrimage’ I tried making mosaic felt and fused glass tiles to create ‘Gaudi Spring’
